Description

Students read a brief background on the California Gold Rush and a primary source on one man's experience prospecting for gold. They will answer 15 questions, complete a creative task, and analyze 5 images (prompts provided). The answers are provided where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--Define "vexation" and give an example of a type of "vexation" he may have encountered.
--Why might Shufelt have used the word "excitement in mentioning how the sailor fell in the water but couldn't swim?
--Does the "mishap on the way to Sacramento" add any value to this account? Why or why not? Why do you think Shufelt recorded those events?
--Summarize what life was like in the mining camp in 6 sentences or less.
--What is prospecting?
--Rewrite the phrase, "being green at mining" in your own words to demonstrate understanding.
